The 7 Sacred Rules at AllStar

At CrossFit AllStar we commit to live the following:

  1. I promise to do my best. My best will vary from day to day, minute to minute. But in that minute I will do my absolute best.
  2. If I can run, I run. If I have to walk, I walk. When I am forced to crawl, I crawl. Then I rest and live to fight another day.
  3. I may struggle, curse and cry but I will never quit.
  4. I will never criticize or beat myself up for what I can't do today. I will just try again tomorrow.
  5. I promise to believe in myself, beginning each workout with the thought that "I can do this!"
  6. I show up to my workouts because I am committed to my health. My commitment to health is an act of self-love.
  7. I acknowledge that my diet is the most important part of my program. The cleaner it is, the better I do.

Where is CrossFit AllStar? Waimea/Kamuela, Big Island, Hawaii

What is Hawaii Island Barbell Club?

Hawaii Island Barbell Club (HIBBC) is a United States Association of Weightlifting (USAW) sanctioned club at CrossFit AllStar on the Big Island of Hawaii. HIBBC is a program that is part of and under the direction and business of CrossFit AllStar LLC. CrossFit AllStar LLC provides the space, equipment, and coaching for the club, at no additional charge beyond our CrossFit membership fees or Barbell Class only fees. (We do NOT run a separate business called Hawaii Island Barbell Club. HIBBC is a program of CrossFit AllStar LLC). You MAY attend Barbell class, without becoming an official USAW member of Hawaii Island Barbell club.

The Purpose of Barbell Class

From the beginning, the purpose of having a Barbell Class and our USAW club has always been to develop Olympic Weightlifting skills and support the sport of Weightlifting. It was never to divide CrossFit and Weightlifting, but allow the 2 to work in tandem with each other. Becasue Olympic Weightlifting is one-third a part of the definition of CrossFit, the goal is to outrun a weightlifter, and out lift a runner. To help develop athletes so that if they choose to do so they may enter, and and do well in USAW competitions, yet also enter and do well in the sport of CrossFit. We utilize barbell movements for athlete development, and to enhance your CrossFit training. We have made 2 hour class times to focus on technique work, and developing athletes technical weaknesses in barbell movements, while training for strength. We found it less desireable to develop an athlete's Olympic Weightlifting in an hour CrossFit class alone, so we've given our athletes a chance to attend this specialized class and gain more skill development to help them in all areas as an athlete.

Who May Attend Class?

ANYONE MAY ATTEND this is not a closed 'club' it's for all CrossFit AllStar members for FREE or drop in for a small fee. CrossFit AllStar unlimited members are encouraged to & may attand Barbell Class at any time as part of their membership. Drop-Ins are welcome, see fees below. You will always save more money by becmong a member of CrossFit AllStar. We also have a Barbell ONLY class membership which is only utilized by a few, but available if needed.

All of our Hawaii Island Barbell Club USAW registered athletes also train during Barbell Class times on Wednesday night 6-8pm and on Sunday 8-10am. We've hired USAW Sports Performance Coach Wayne Hess as the lead coach of the program & of Barbell Class(see more on our coaching staff below). Wayne also trains and coaches CrossFit, so he understands your athlete goals as well. Additionally, we're blessed to have many CrossFit community members & USAW members that volunteer to help keep the USAW club of athletes motivated to compete, help keep our events running, help referee our events, and help keep accurate scoreing of our events inlcuding but not limited to Carolyn Hess, Lena Mossman, Zoe Salazar, KC Stallsmith, and more.

How do I become a USAW member of Hawaii Island Barbell Club?

CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting Certificate

Since becoming an AllStar, Carolyn and I have seen a huge change in our life for the better. It not only helped us physically, but mentally and socially as well. We use to be really secluded and stick to just people we knew. Now we have a vast array of new friends and family that we enjoy working out with and hanging out with outside of the box.  The physical part is huge in our life and overall health! My biggest reward as a coach is to watch people benefit from their training over time.

Coach Wayne has been training at CrossFit AllStar since June of 2013. He currently coaches CrossFit classes at CFAS, and continued to develop the Barbell Class here under the direction of original Head Coach Chris Matute. Wayne has had a positive, life changing experience with CrossFit. Now that his whole family trains at CrossFit AllStar, including his wife and 2 children, his experience is family bonding as well! Anyone who has had the opportunity to work with Coach Wayne would say that he's approachable, knowledgable, and communicates is a way we can all understand and learn from.

The Olympic Lifts intrigue Wayne because of their complexity and the attention to detail required in each position as well as the mental focus required in the execution of the lifts. Wayne's greatest hope for the HIBBC is to expand the club and get even greater involvement. He is also dedicated to continuing our Annual Barbell Rodeo, a USAW sanctioned Weightlifting Competition at CrossFit AllStar.

Christopher Matute, First Head Coach of Hawaii Island Barbell Club 2013-2014

We want to thank Christopher Matute (above) for helping get the club started by being the first Head Coach of the program. He laid the foundation for hard work, and brave hearts here. Mahalo Chris!

Our gym hosts Barbell EVENTS!

Each year we host the Barbell Rodeo, a USAW Sanctioned meet. We also host the Holiday Weightlifting Recital in December, a non-sancitoned meet and canned food drive. We also help other organizations by hosting non-annual meets like 'Snatch What Yo Mama Gave Ya' that helped support We Empower Youth, Heather Campbells non-profit to help fight childhood obesity in kids and teens.

Barbell Rodeo

Hawaii Island Barbell Club and CrossFit AllStar are proud to host the Big Islands first ever USAW Sanctioned Weightlifting meet, the 'Barbell Rodeo'. 2014 was the first year we held the competition, with 15 lifters from the Big Island and the Island of Oahu. Top Sinclair lifters were Michelle Downs and Matthew Mantooth from Oahu Barbell Club. Additionally, Matthew Mantooth qualified for the American Open at the 2014 Barbell Rodeo. The event was a success and we hope to grow this event in the years to come!
