Kā Waimea Makahiki is an annual event celebrating the Makahiki season, traditionally a time of peace, thanksgiving and rejuvenation of human and natural resources in the Hawaiian culture.

Every December keiki to kūpuna gather at the Waimea Park to engage in various activities and learning opportunities. All ages are encouraged to play the Makahiki games, create functional art through hana noʻeau and eat healthful foods of the land grown, gathered and prepared by the Kanu o ka ‘Āina 6-12 grade students and families.

Kā Waimea Makahiki, modeled after the Kā Molokai Makahiki now in its 28th year, features traditional Hawaiian games and athletic competitions for elementary, middle and high school students, as well as the makua (parent) and kupuna (grandparent) generation.

Festivities open with Hawaiian protocol in the form of the oli komo or opening chants at 7 am. The games and sporting events commence immediately thereafter. There are over 10 events to participate in including kūkini (foot racing), ‘ōʻō ihe (spear throwing), moa paheʻe (dart sliding) and kōnane (form of checkers).

Kā Waimea Makahiki invites interested community members from near and far to join a fun-filled day of games, sports and friendly competition permeated by the values of our Hawaiian ancestors.

Last year we had 3 teams from CrossFit AllStar participate. See picture below...consider joining a team! Or just come and enjoy watching these exciting events! This is one of the greatest things going on in Waimea!!!

This year Ka Waimea Makahiki will be on Saturday, January 12, 2013 from 7:00 am – 5:00 pm at Waimea Park. Below: Some of last year's participants from CFAS. For a slide show of pics from last year click HERE.
