Double Trouble Team Competition....Big Islands FIRST CF TEAM COMP!

CrossFit AllStar was well represented at this weekends Double Trouble team competition event at Pohaku Strength and Conditioning in Kona. CrossFit gyms from around the island showed up, AND brought TEAMS! The competition teams could be male/male, female/female, or coed. Within those divisions there were also scaled and Rx sub-divisions of each. There were teams of friends, but also teams consisting of spouses which was quite interesting to watch! For some, this was a first time CrossFit-style competition and there’s no better way than to go through something like this than with a partner! MAHALO to Dana and Andy from Pohaku for putting this entire event together, we know how much work it is and we appreciate all you effort!!!

The biggest highlight for me, was the fact that our Olympic Weightlifting coach Chris Matute, AKA Christmas Cupcakes, not only participated, but won an award and recognition for putting up the largest weight at 280lbs. in WOD#2 the 2-Position Clean and Jerk Barbell Complex (see photo above). The significance of this is large, and widespread. Chris has not only been the first one of us to completely STOP CrossFitting (except for novelty experiences), and START Olympic Weightlifting full time, and this is to all our advantage not only Chris'. However, one thing hasn’t changed about Chris...he hasn’t ever left the box or waived in his commitment or loyalty to AllStar and our Athletes. He understands how important the lifts are to CrossFit, and he continues to be a big part of our AllStar community at the box.

Chris joined CrossFit AllStar April 17th, 2012, about 2 years ago. In July of 2013 he went ‘Oly Only’, taking a recommendation put out on our website about a separate online weightlifting program, which he was the only taker and the only one I knew would stick with it. Later, we went together to secure our USAW Sport Performance training certificates and to a seminar with Olympian Dimitri Klokov among others, and Chris went on to Waxman’s Gym for additional time with Dimitri. Chris is not only an excellent lifter in his own right, but also a very good coach. And, more important, and great human being.

Hawaii Island Barbell Club

At Chris’ recommendation, we went on to start Hawaii Island Barbell Club in February of this year, a USAW sanctioned club here at CrossFit AllStar, and started by training the kids and taking them to compete in the Oahu Open in Honolulu Feb. 16, 2014. The goal was always to have an adult division of Hawaii Island Barbell Club here at AllStar and that will soon become reality. Coach Chris will be leading the way, and it’s important we’re all right behind him. Stay tuned for more details as we finalize what this new club will look like. It will support your CrossFit training with specialized training in Weightlifting, AND offer a place to train specifically for Weightlifting if that is also your goal. We don’t want to hold anyone back, and only want to support all of our athletes needs and goals.
