Inspirational Athlete: MARTA ALLIGOOD
Written by KC
This post begins a tradition of 'Inspirational Athletes' featured at CrossFit AllStar. These are athletes that I cannot help but share with you because they inspire ME daily and I know they will inspire you to. These Athletes show commitment and live the following 7 sacred AllStar rules:
The 7 AllStar Rules:
1. I promise to do my best. My best will vary from day to day, minute to minute. But in that minute I will do my absolute best.
2. If I can run, I run. If I have to walk, I walk. When I am forced to crawl, I crawl. Then I rest and live to fight another day.
3. I may struggle, curse, and cry but I will never quit.
4. I will never criticize or beat myself up for what I can’t do today. I will just try again tomorrow.
5. I promise to believe in myself, beginning each workout with the thought that "I can do this!"
6. I show up to my workouts because I am committed to my health. My commitment to health is an act of self-love.
7. I acknowledge that my diet is the most important part of my program. The cleaner it is, the better I do.
Marta Alligood
In her words:
Name: Marta Alligood
Nickname: Marta the Great
Age:52
From: San Diego California
Before Crossfit: I have always been fairly active but before Crossfit I was struggling to find a fitness regime that really worked for me. I was using a personal trainer, but very occasionally, I was doing zumba twice a week, walking a lot and my usual water sports. I have been training with Crossfit almost exactly one year. My motivation to start was my best buddy, Layne.
Since training: I have met my first goal of one pull up and my second goal of three consecutive dead hang pull ups. (And my more personal goal of changing my body shape.)
Current goal: is to do a chest to bar pull up, but I am a little scared to write that on the white board.
Favorite WOD: is always the one I just completed.
Favorite CrossFit movement: Push Ups and Pull Ups cause I can do them well.
Least favorite CrossFit movement: Double Unders cause they hurt my legs when I whip myself.
Crossfit has changed my life because: I started just after going through a very difficult period of my life and it has made me remember that I am a very strong woman. I feel that my inner strength is now reflected in my pull ups and L sits, and of course, dead lift.
I have learned through Crossfit: that just showing up and doing your best to keep moving really does work and that I am stronger (a lot stronger) than I thought I was. CrossFit is empowering.
What helps you get through a tough WOD? My coaches, KC, Josh and Don
Sports enjoyed outside of Crossfit: almost all have to do with the water, scuba, snorkeling, body surfing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, paddling a canoe, and of course my hikes with my best friend, Layne on Sunday morning.
Favorite things to do on the Big Island: are all of the water sports I mentioned and hiking, but also dancing and listening to whatever music Layne takes me to. The big island is a special place. I enjoy the peacefulness of being under the water, or just being in the water and looking back at Mauna Kea, or standing on the edge of Waipi'o and taking in the view, and enjoying our islands majestic presence.
Favorite paleo meal: is a salad with any type of fish on it or my favorite breakfast/lunch, some nuts and a smoothie made with lots of kale, coconut water, frozen mango & banana, and lime juice.
Favorite non-paleo meal: I don't really have a favorite non paleo meal, maybe a really good mexican meal with homemade corn tortillas, grilled chiles con queso and fresh grilled fish, but that's easy to avoid on the Big Island!
Thanks so much for sharing a part of yourself with us Marta. You can even do a push up with me on your back! That's truly inspirational!
We love you Marta the Great!
