Tukong Kids At CrossFit AllStarTukong Promotion Test Jan. 28, 2012

Written by Tukong Instructor Don May

If you ever happen to drop by CrossFit AllStar on a Monday or Wednesday afternoon around 3:30, youʼll notice that thereʼs a bunch of smiling kids wearing black uniforms in nice straight lines, yelling, kicking, blocking, punching, all in unison. Youʼll also probably notice that in addition to the usual collection of barbells, bumper plates, gymnastic rings and box jumps, there are kicking targets, mats and maybe even a portable heavy bag. Thatʼs because every Monday and Wednesday afternoon Crossfit Allstar becomes a traditional Martial Arts dojang (School, or more specifically “place of the way”) where kids, ages 6-12 put on their doboks (uniforms) tie on their belts and spend an hour learning a powerful Korean martial art called Tukong Moosul led by Crossfit AllStar coach and Tukong Moosul master Don May.Tukong Master Instructor Don May

Tukong Moosul originated in the Dae Yeong Sa buddhist temple in South Korea and was brought to America in 1981 by Grand Master Wonik Yi. Instructor Don May began studying with Grand Master Yi in the early 80ʻs and holds the rank of 4th Dan (4th degree black belt).

Like Crossfit, Tukong Moosul prides itself on being comprehensive and functional and like crossfitters, students of Tukong Moosul specialize in non-specialization. Students learn the usual arsenal of punches, kicks and blocks as well as sweeping, throwing, grappling, joint twisting and traditional weapons (staff, cane, sword, nun-chuck, etc.). Students of Tukong Moosul are also taught a centuries old secular philosophy of respect, honor, non-violence and conflict avoidance; in short, students of Tukong Moosul train to become strong, humble, peaceful warriors.

One very special aspect of our Tukong Kidʼs program here at Crossfit AllStar is that most of our young students also participate in the Crossfit Kidʼs program on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Strength, power, stamina, flexibility, agility, Grand Master Wonik Yi creator of Tukong Moosulmetabolic conditioning, speed, accuracy, coordination and balance....these make up the foundation of “fitness” in the world of Crossfit. Our comprehensive martial arts practice embraces all of these and adds focus, self discipline, concentration as well as a strong philosophical foundation of patience, honor, respect and humility.

On Saturday, January 28th, we held our very first promotion test. Our Tukong kids all did an outstanding job and 9 of them promoted to yellow belt. Congratulations to our Tukong Kids, keep up the fantastic work!
