Are 'imitation' Paleo foods always healthy?

You rock. I love CrossFit All Stars.
For me it's very challenging to come back and try to work out at this level after such a long time away from challenging workouts. 1 mile swims are nothing compared to a WOD. I'm loving the workouts and the pain. Hank and I both laugh when we are in pain - we repeat what you said to us "pain - that's good means you're doing something" - so true.
What I appreciate most out of your program is your patience and your helping me figure things out. I often feel like a 5 year old going to class for the first time and wondering what everyone else is doing - 'cause it's all new to me. With that said, I can now jump rope 25 times (single unders) in a row - I couldn't do more than 5 when I started. I can hold myself on the bars and 'try' to do a pull up - a month ago I could only hold the bar and hang, my arms had nothing in them. I still sort of like burpees and I think it's cool to learn how to lift weights so perfectly, even if I am still very nerdy about it. So I'm thrilled at such (little) progress. It's going to all add up over the course of this year - and I'm all good as long as I'm moving forward. Thank you for keeping me focused and allowing me to go at my own pace and I really can't wait for 12 months from now.
I love the kids energy - it keeps things real and enjoyable. They make me laugh when I am thinking about the WOD too much.
I love the people at CFAS - it takes a little getting used to having strangers cheer you on and it's 100% appreciated. I like having to repeat our names at the start of the session and answer a thoughtful question (or not). Helps me get to know the other people. Very good tool.
The paleo thing is intense - we have always eaten very healthy but in learning to be strict paleo I had to re-learn about fats. Coconut oil is about 5x higher in calories than canola oil. But I understand now why we need to get rid of the bad oils. I gained 5 lbs over the holidays from cooking yummy paleo dishes but not re-doing my math on portion control and carbs vs. calories. It's a leaning process. I am now on an Atkins type paleo program - I'm now learning about cooking low fat (paleo low fat), counting carbs and healthy calories.
That's it ... thanks for all you do, we're lucky to have such a creative and fun place to work out.
Hugs,
These dudes probably didn't have paleo cookies.

Aloha Ginger,
Such great feedback Ginger thank you!!!
Indeed Coconut Oil is all the rage right now, but I still use it sparingly. Any food, even paleo foods, imitating a 'sweet' or a baked good should be treated with respect and limited. These foods are not what our Paleolithic ancestors ate, and isn't that the point of the diet? When we try to imitate cookies, muffins, and baked goods and call then 'paleo' just because we substituted coconut flour and the like, just makes a better sweet or baked good, but it's still a sweet or baked good. Ultimately, it might be a good idea to limit these 'imitation' paleo foods and get back to roots, or at least try as much as possible. But for someone like my husband Josh, he uses unlimited amounts of fats and oils because that's where he gets his energy from and he's actually trying to gain weight and muscle. He eats bags of mac nuts all the time with ease, I don't because I know it would not be right for me. We are all so individual. I'm not a nutritionist, but I know that everything about a man's body and metabolism is different from a woman. It would benefit a woman trying to loose weight to definitely limit fats (nuts, seeds, oils) even if they are 'good' fats because they are just so calorie dense. You are right on that one. I'm stoked you learned fast. Some people think that if they make a desert 'paleo' then its ok to eat lots of it...that's not going to work out so good for weight loss however.
I'm so delighted you are enjoying your training at AllStar and I thank you for choosing to train with us. We love having you in our CrossFit AllStar family! See you in the gym!
XOXO
